BC Conservation Data Centre: Conservation Status Report

Pyrrocoma carthamoides var. carthamoides
Columbian goldenweed

Scientific Name: Pyrrocoma carthamoides var. carthamoides
English Name: Columbian goldenweed

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S4
Date Status Assigned: April 30, 2019
Date Last Reviewed: April 30, 2019
Reasons: This species has a restricted range in B.C. (ca. 3300 square km) and occurs in relatively small, scattered populations (16+ occurrences), but is apparently unthreatened and most occurrences probably have good viability. This taxon does not appear to be intrinsically vulnerable or limited by habitat availability.

Range
Range Extent: E = 5,000-20,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: Range in B.C. is ca. 3300 square km (using GIS tools).
Area of Occupancy (km2): AC = 1-5
Area of Occupancy Comments: Area of occupancy is about 2900 square m, but is likely greater as data is available for only nine of the occurrences.

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: BC = 6 - 80
Comments: At least 16 occurrences, probably more if a directed survey done.
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: CD = 4 - 40
Comments: Most of the occurrences probably have good chances of persisting.
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: C = 4 - 12
Comments: At least 4 occurrences are in protected areas.
Population Size: C = 250 - 1,000 individuals
Comments: There are about 500 to 600 plants currently known for the B.C. population and other populations are very likely to exist.

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: Unthreatened
Comments: There are no obvious threats to the persistence of the populations of this species in BC. Grazing livestock don't appear to disturb plants excessively due to the habitats where they grow (rocky hilltops with low vegetation). Cattle are unlikely to concentrate in these locations and trample plants and compact soils. Although cheatgrass is present in at least one of the sites, introduced species don't appear to be a problem where Pyrrocoma carthamoides var. carthamoides grows. There is a relatively high proportion of native species in most of the locations.

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
