Neurotrichus gibbsii
American Shrew Mole

Scientific Name: Neurotrichus gibbsii
English Name: American Shrew Mole
English Name Synonyms: Shrew-mole

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S4
Date Status Assigned:
Date Last Reviewed: March 22, 2024
Reasons: This species is widespread in the lower mainland but in relatively low numbers throughout its range. It has likely lost, and continues to lose, habitat in urban areas (Greater Vancouver), but has much intact habitat in the remainder of its range.

Range
Range Extent: F = 20,000-200,000 square km
Range Extent Estimate (km2): 21,000
Range Extent Comments: Range extent is approximately 21 000 sq km based on the map in Nagorsen and Panter (2024).
Area of Occupancy (km2): U = Unknown

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: D = 81 - 300
Comments: The map in Nagorsen and Panter (2024), indicates that there are likely at least 50 known occurrences, and probably more that are not yet known. There are 84 observations on iNaturalist (accessed February 2024).
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: Rank Factor not assessed
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: Rank Factor not assessed
Population Size: U = Unknown

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: U = Unknown
Comments: Development likely threatens local populations via habitat loss and fragmentation, however the species' habitat is widespread outside urban areas in the lower mainland (Nagoorsen and Panter 2024, Zuleta and Galindo-Leal 1994; Kremaster et. al. 1993).

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Long-Term Trend: U = Unknown

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: Rank Factor not assessed
Environmental Specificity: Rank Factor not assessed
