| Scientific Name: | Enallagma clausum |
|---|---|
| English Name: | Alkali Bluet |
| Provincial Status Summary | |
| Status: | S3 |
| Date Status Assigned: | April 29, 2015 |
| Date Last Reviewed: | March 15, 2023 |
| Reasons: | Restricted range and small number of occurrences and significant threats. All but two of the known locations are in Okanagan Valley and those two are historical. The sites are in vulnerable habitats (lakeshores and grassland ponds), under pressure for housing, recreational and agricultural developments. The majority of current records are from one location. |
| Range | |
| Range Extent: | F = 20,000-200,000 square km |
| Range Extent Comments: | This species is found in the Okanagan Valley with two historical records from the Cariboo Chilcotin area. The range extent including these records is 29,939 km2 (which is used). Without these two 1930's records, the range extent is 2044 km2. |
| Area of Occupancy (km2): | E = 26-125 |
| Area of Occupancy Estimate (km2): | 88 |
| Occurrences & Population | |
| Number of Occurrences: | BC = 6 - 80 |
| Comments: | Likely around 20 occurrences based on NatureServe separation distances, RBCM records, gbif and iNaturalist records. |
| Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: | Rank Factor not assessed |
| Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: | B = 1 - 3 |
| Comments: | One currently known occurrence is within the White Lake Grasslands Protected Area. |
| Population Size: | U = Unknown |
| Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected) | |
| Degree of Threat: | C = Medium |
| Comments: | This species is found in saline ponds and lakes in dry grasslands and forest in the Okanagan Valley. These wetlands are are susceptible to drought (which is increasing in frequency and intensity) as well as pollutant and sedimentation contamination. |
| Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences) | |
| Short-Term Trend: | U = Unknown |
| Long-Term Trend: | AE = Decline of >30% |
| Comments: | This is based on the very few recent records and the majority from one location in the Okanagan (White Lake) whereas historical locations and further north along the valley appear not to have had records despite people out doing surveys (e.g. BC Parks) and a number of keen odonataphiles out looking. |
