Nothochelone nemorosa
woodland penstemon

Scientific Name: Nothochelone nemorosa
English Name: woodland penstemon

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S4
Date Status Assigned: April 30, 2021
Date Last Reviewed: April 30, 2021
Reasons: This species is plentiful in some valleys in coastal B.C. with a range extent of ca. 15,000 square km and at least 100,000 to 200,000 plants. There are at least 21 occurrences currently known but likely many others would be discovered if a thorough inventory would be completed. It is probably not very threatened.

Range
Range Extent: E = 5,000-20,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: This species occurs over about 15,000 square km in B.C. (from GIS tools).
Area of Occupancy (km2): U = Unknown

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: C = 21 - 80
Comments: There are at least 21 occurrences (including six historic that are quite possibly extant but no recent inventory to confirm) and likely many more. Recent inventory in the Homathko and Southgate valleys revealed 100 - 200,000 plants (C. Bjork pers. comm. 2007).
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: U = Unknown
Comments: At least two occurrences considered resilient and unthreatened (C. Bjork, pers. comm. 2007).
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: U = Unknown
Population Size: G = 100,000 - 1,000,000 individuals
Comments: There are an estimate of at least 100,000 to 200,000 plants in B.C. (C. Bjork, pers. comm. 2007).

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: Unknown

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Long-Term Trend: U = Unknown

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: U=Unknown
Comments: Probably not intrinsically vulnerable as it appears to reproduce well with large populations in Homalthko and Southgate valleys. Also, this species grows well in disturbed places (C. Bjork, pers. comm. 2007).
Environmental Specificity: U=Unknown
