BC Conservation Data Centre: Conservation Status Report

Planorbula campestris
Meadow Rams-horn

Scientific Name: Planorbula campestris
English Name: Meadow Rams-horn

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S4S5
Date Status Assigned: November 18, 2024
Date Last Reviewed: November 18, 2024
Reasons: There are few records for this species, occurring over a large range in BC. Habitat types are somewhat limited (vernal ponds, swamps and spring-time flooded portions of permanent water bodies).

Range
Range Extent: G = 200,000-2,500,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: Clarke's (1981) range map extends over the Rockies into the extreme SE edge of BC along the northern border with Alberta with with an additional location on southern Vancouver Island. There are records outside of Clarke's range in the lower mainland, Okanagan and central/northern BC (Lee 2000 a,c; Canadian Museum of Nature, accessed 2015, Klinkenberg (EFauna) accessed Nov. 18, 2024).

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: CE = 21 to >300
Comments: Although there are few records, they occur over a large range within BC. From Lepitzki (2014): "There are 3 records in Canadian Museum of Nature from 1883 [Wigwam River] 1905 [Chilliwack Lake] and 1969 [Okanagan Lake] in collection databases (Canadian Museum of Nature 2015). Lee (2000a,c) also found it at 5 sites in northern BC." There is a record from 2001 near 150 Mile House (Klinkenberg (Efauna), accessed Nov. 18, 2024).
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: Rank Factor not assessed
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: Rank Factor not assessed
Population Size: Rank Factor not assessed

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: U = Unknown

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: Rank Factor not assessed
Long-Term Trend: Rank Factor not assessed

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: Rank Factor not assessed
Environmental Specificity: CD = Moderate to broad.
Comments: Occurs in vernal ponds, swamps and spring-time flooded portions of permanent water bodies. Aquatic vegetation is ordinarily dense and substrates are mud (Clarke 1981).
