BC Conservation Data Centre: Conservation Status Report

Cicindela pugetana
Sagebrush Tiger Beetle

Scientific Name: Cicindela pugetana
English Name: Sagebrush Tiger Beetle

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S2S3
Date Status Assigned: November 23, 2023
Date Last Reviewed: November 23, 2023
Reasons: There are a low number of records occurring over a relatively small range in extreme southern BC. Habitat is restricted to sagebrush/grasslands.

Range
Range Extent: DE = 1,000-20,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: Restricted to sagebrush areas from extreme southern BC (Okanagan / Similkameen regions) south to north-central Oregon (Pearson et al. 2006).

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: BC = 6 - 80
Comments: There are at least six occurrences known from BC (Osoyoos, Chopaka, Okanagan Falls, Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon areas) and potentially more that aren't reported or accessible in databases (Marks and Young 2009; Wood 2020).
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: Rank Factor not assessed
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: Rank Factor not assessed
Population Size: U = Unknown

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: Rank Factor not assessed

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Long-Term Trend: U = Unknown

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: B=Moderately vulnerable
Comments: Active from early march to mid-June and then again for a short period in late Sept to late Oct, larvae unknown (Pearson et al. 2006).
Environmental Specificity: AB=Very narrow to narrow.
Comments: Restricted to sagebrush areas of the northern Great Basin; occupies bare soil patches and road cuts through low brush (Pearson et al. 2006). In a recent tiger beetle survey in this area, all C. pugetana were observed in sagebrush grassland habitats with little to no large trees (Marks & Young 2009).
