|---|---|
| Scientific Name Synonyms: |
Gomphus graslinellus
|
| English Name: | Pronghorn Clubtail |
| Provincial Status Summary | |
| Status: | S2S3 |
| Date Status Assigned: | January 28, 2000 |
| Date Last Reviewed: | March 15, 2023 |
| Reasons: | This species is found in a relatively restricted range with few occurrences in dry, warm valleys of the interior. Many of the habitats (sandy beaches of medium and large lakes) is under threat from development and recreational use. There are low numbers of individuals when it is found. |
| Range | |
| Range Extent: | F = 20,000-200,000 square km |
| Range Extent Estimate (km2): | 32,000 |
| Range Extent Comments: | This species occurs from the Okanagan Valley, north to Salmon Arm and east to Wasa Lake in the Kootenays and south along the border at Christina Creek (RBCM 2004, iNaturalist accessed February 2023). |
| Area of Occupancy (km2): | CD = 3-25 |
| Area of Occupancy Estimate (km2): | 60-76 |
| Area of Occupancy Comments: | Estimated based on occurrences. |
| Occurrences & Population | |
| Number of Occurrences: | B = 6 - 20 |
| Comments: | There are approximately 12 known extant locations for this species,. B.C., is relatively well surveyed for dragonflies with many odonate enthusiasts out looking, yet there are only three records in iNaturalist (accessed February 2023). It is a large, easily recognizable species |
| Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: | Rank Factor not assessed |
| Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: | Rank Factor not assessed |
| Population Size: | U = Unknown |
| Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected) | |
| Degree of Threat: | C = Medium |
| Comments: | There are threats to the water bodies and shorelines throughout the Okanagan which is the core of this species' range. These come in the form of developments (housing, tourism and commercial), water way management, runoff in the form of pollutants or sediment from agricultural operations and roads. The two occurrences to the east, Christina Creek and Wasa Lake are within provincial parks which will afford some protection from development threats. The occurrence around Vaseux Lake is also protected from development. |
| Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences) | |
| Short-Term Trend: | U = Unknown |
| Long-Term Trend: | F = Decline of 10-30% |
| Comments: | There are a few localities where there are historical records and despite frequent searches during the appropriate times, have not been located (e.g. Texas Creek, Salmon Arm). |
