Micranthes hieraciifolia
hawkweed-leaved saxifrage

Scientific Name: Micranthes hieraciifolia
Scientific Name Synonyms: Saxifraga hieraciifolia
English Name: hawkweed-leaved saxifrage

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S2S3
Date Status Assigned: April 30, 2019
Date Last Reviewed: April 30, 2019
Reasons: Saxifraga hieracifolia var. hieracifolia occurs in remote areas of northern and central BC with extensive apparently suitable habitat. Additional populations are highly probable, but a directed inventory for this species has not yet been completed. The remote locations may mean the populations are unlikely to be threatened by human activity, but there is still a possibility that the taxon may be threatened in other ways, or intrinsically vulnerable due to few, possibly small, populations (only 2 to 3 extant sites known), or other factors. A rank of S1S3 has therefore been assigned, since there is insufficient data to support a more specific rank.

Range
Range Extent: U = Unknown
Range Extent Comments: The 2 to 3 known populations are in nothern and central BC.
Area of Occupancy (km2): U = Unknown
Linear Distance of Occupancy: U = Unknown
Area of Occupancy Comments: Known populations have not been surveyed to determine area of occupancy.

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: AC = 1 - 80
Comments: The total number of known occurrences is: 2 to 3. Although collections are few, the taxon occurs in remote areas with extensive appropriate habitat, and additional populations almost certainly occur.
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: U = Unknown
Comments: Known populations have not been surveyed to determine viability.
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: U = Unknown
Comments: No populations are known to be protected.
Population Size: U = Unknown
Comments: Known populations have not been surveyed to determine size.

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: Unknown
Comments: Remote locations suggests threats due to human activity are probably low.

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Comments: There is insufficient information available to determine short-term trends.
Long-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Comments: There is insufficient information available to determine long-term trends

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: U=Unknown
Comments: Saxifraga hieracifolia var. hieracifolia may or may not be intrinsically vulnerable. If it is intrinsically vulnerable in any way, this will undermine the assumption that extensive potential habitat will equate to additional occurrences
Environmental Specificity: U=Unknown
Comments: Two of the populations are in alpine habitat in northern BC; the third is in Ponderosa Pine parkland in central BC.
Other Rank Considerations:

Information Gaps
Research Needs:
Inventory Needs: Directed inventory will be necessary to establish range, and number, size and viability of extant populations.
