Provincial Status Summary
Status: S5
Date Status Assigned:
Date Last Reviewed: March 21, 2024
Reasons: This species is found throughout much of mainland BC, sometimes in high densities. There are some threats but these are dissipated through the large range.

Range
Range Extent: G = 200,000-2,500,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: This species is found across mainland B.C. with the exception of the north west corner (Nagorsen 2005b).
Area of Occupancy (km2): U = Unknown

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: E = > 300
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: Rank Factor not assessed
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: Rank Factor not assessed
Population Size: U = Unknown
Comments: Densities of animals per hectare average 3-15 with some densities found up to 84 animals/ha in spruce-fir forests in the north and montane spruce in the south, while coastal Western Hemlock forests can are often less than two per hectare (Nagorsen 2005b).

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: U = Unknown
Comments: Found from sea level to 2250m asl, this species is found in many habitats but prefers forests with thick understory (Nagorsen 2005b). With this preference, clearcutting, development or agriculture may be threats.
