BC Conservation Data Centre: Conservation Status Report

Lymnaea atkaensis
Frigid Lymnaea

Scientific Name: Lymnaea atkaensis
English Name: Frigid Lymnaea

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S4S5
Date Status Assigned: November 07, 2024
Date Last Reviewed: November 07, 2024
Reasons: This species occurs over a large range in northern BC; however there are few records.

Range
Range Extent: G = 200,000-2,500,000 square km
Range Extent Estimate (km2): 205,200
Range Extent Comments: Occurs in northern BC (Clarke 1981; Lee 2000c). The estimated range (using MapSource) of all the records is ~205,200 km sq. (Lepitzki 2014).

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: CE = 21 to >300
Comments: INaturalist has a single record in BC, NE of Atlin from 2022 (INaturalist; observation 127672807; Accessed Nov. 11, 2024). From Lepitzki (2014): Accounting for the multiple records from the same lakes, this species has only been collected from 9 different sites. There are 12 records (8 in Canadian Museum of Nature from 1962 [3 records], 5 from 1972 [but 3 records from 1 lake and 3 from another lake]; and 4 by Forsyth from 1996) in collection databases, all from northern BC. Lee (2000a,c) also found it at 1 new site in northern BC (and mentions 3 other sites where it had been collected by others).
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: Rank Factor not assessed
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: Rank Factor not assessed
Population Size: Rank Factor not assessed

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: U = Unknown

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: Rank Factor not assessed
Long-Term Trend: Rank Factor not assessed

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: Rank Factor not assessed
Environmental Specificity: Rank Factor not assessed
Comments: Although Clarke (1981) states that it is found in clear, cold oligotrophic lakes in northern BC, Lee (200c) collected in one lake with abundant vegetation (Leptizki 2014).
