Picea sitchensis / Rubus spectabilis Wet Submaritime 1
Sitka spruce / salmonberry Wet Submaritime 1

Scientific Name: Picea sitchensis / Rubus spectabilis Wet Submaritime 1
English Name: Sitka spruce / salmonberry Wet Submaritime 1

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S2
Date Status Assigned: September 29, 1994
Date Last Reviewed: July 14, 2010
Reasons: Based on local knowledge, there are few occurrences and few mature to old forest stands remaining. The threats associated with harvesting, hydro power generation, and climate change are ongoing. The ecosystem has high value as grizzly bear habitat.

Range
Range Extent: D = 1,000-5,000 square km
Range Extent Estimate (km2): 2389
Biogeoclimatic Unit: CWHws1/07
Range Extent Comments: The range extent estimate of this ecological community is based on Version 9 of the Biogeclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) map (B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations. 2014).
Spatial Pattern:

Occurrences
Number of Occurrences: U = Unknown
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: U = Unknown

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: AB = Very high - high
Comments: Old-growth sites have already been seriously affected by logging interests. The ecosystem is apparently included within the Central and North Coast Ecosystem Based Management, however the name format on the Land Use Orders makes it difficult to confirm this.

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Long-Term Trend: U = Unknown

Other Factors
Intrinsic Vulnerability: AB=Highly to moderately vulnerable.
Environmental Specificity: B=Narrow. Specialist or community with key requirements common.
Comments: High-bench floodplains.
Other Rank Considerations: The site series has "high grizzly bear value" and "few mature stands remain" (Radcliffe et al. 1991).
