Papilio machaon oregonius
Old World Swallowtail, oregonius subspecies

Scientific Name: Papilio machaon oregonius
English Name: Old World Swallowtail, oregonius subspecies

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S4
Date Status Assigned: January 01, 2008
Date Last Reviewed: March 31, 2021
Reasons:

Range
Range Extent: F = 20,000-200,000 square km
Range Extent Comments: This species is throughout the central interior, from the US border and up the southern Okanagan into the upper Fraser Canyon. Range extent approximately 50,000 km2 (J. Heron, pers. comm. 2012).
Area of Occupancy (km2): U = Unknown

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: D = 81 - 300
Comments: There are about 65 dots in Guppy and Shepard, and a number of more occurrences from Guppy's database. So estimate 80 - 300 occurrences (J. Heron, pers. comm. 2012)
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: U = Unknown
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: Rank Factor not assessed
Population Size: U = Unknown

Threats (to population, occurrences, or area affected)
Degree of Threat: U = Unknown
Comments: The species inhabits dry sagebrush areas of the southern interior and Chilcotin, north to Soda Creek. Although this habitat is abundant, there are threats from grazing and natural forest succession. In the southern parts of its range there is likely urban/commercial/agricultural development, but in the northern parts of its range (e.g., Chilcotin) there is less of a threat of habitat conversion, more of a threat from rangeland practises (J. Heron. pers. comm. 2012).

Trend (in population, range, area occupied, and/or condition of occurrences)
Short-Term Trend: U = Unknown
Long-Term Trend: U = Unknown
