Juncus nevadensis var. inventus
dune rush

Scientific Name: Juncus nevadensis var. inventus
English Name: dune rush

Provincial Status Summary
Status: S2S3
Date Status Assigned: April 30, 2021
Date Last Reviewed: April 30, 2021
Reasons: There are currently four known occurrences of Juncus nevadensis var. inventus in British Columbia, all of which are considered extant. The range extent is less than 100 square kilometres and the area of occupancy is 16 square kilometres. No discernible threats have been noted by the observers and their presence in Pacific Rim National Park offers some measure of protection.

Range
Range Extent: A = <100 square km
Range Extent Comments: The range extent for Juncus nevadensis var. inventus, estimated based on suitable habitat between known occurrences, is less than100 square kilometres. This species is currently known from about 8 km of beach in Pacific Rim National Park on both sides of Barkley sound.
Area of Occupancy (km2): CD = 3-25
Area of Occupancy Comments: The area of occupancy, using a 2km x 2km grid cell for extant occurrences, is 16 square kilometres.

Occurrences & Population
Number of Occurrences: AB = 1 - 20
Comments: There are currently 4 known occurrences of Juncus nevadensis var. inventus documented in British Columbia, all of which are considered extant.
Number of Occurrences with Good Viability / Ecological Integrity: BC = 1 - 12
Number of Occurrences Appropriately Protected & Managed: C = 4 - 12
Comments: All four known locations are within Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
Population Size: BC = 50 - 1,000 individuals
Comments: Several plants around stagnant pool at one site (and several more below that), frequent and co-dominant along 400 m along creek at another, and small patch in a third site (F. Lomer, pers. comm. 2013). As a rhizomatous species there is some difficulty in estimating the number of individuals.
