Global Habitat Comments: This species is found in vernal ponds and marshes and springtime flooded margins of intermittent streams, often with dense vegetation and mud substrate (Clarke 1981, O?Neal and Soulliere 2006).
Provincial Habitat Comments: Veneral ponds, marshes and springtime flooded margins of intermittent streams; associated with dense vegetation and mud bottoms; also in small rivers on S Vancouver Island (Clarke 1981, Lee 2000a).

Distribution
Endemic: N
Global Range Comment: Burch (1989) lists the distribution as Alaska south to Oregon, northern Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and eastern Oklahoma, east to eastern Ohio, western New York; in Canada in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; and Texas (as P. carus). Although California is included in the range by Taylor (1981), it's not included in Richards and Rogers (2011). In Canada, P. umbilicatellus is primarily in prairie localities from southern Manitoba to central Alberta and southern British Columbia (Clarke 1981).
