Global Habitat Comments: On moist rocks (Lawton 1971). "Often growing inverted under rock ledges or in crevices, especially in areas of high humidity sometimes mixed in with other bryophytes; in North America it occurs in subalpine areas" (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2007).

Endemic: N
Global Range Comment: British Columbia, Washington, Alaska, and New England (Lawton 1971). In Europe, the species occurs in the Pyrenees, central Europe, Fennoscandia, Jan Mayen, and Caucasus; also in China and Japan (Hill et al 1994). Crum and Anderson (1981) have no doubt that the New England collection is incorrect; they have seen material from Japan also.
