(Type / Subtype / Dependence)
Global Habitat Comments: Seems to be restricted to wooded inland areas. In some sites, the plant favors mildly eutrophic habitats, forming hummocks with Sphagnum angustifolium and S. magellanicum. It also grows scattered rather than tufted in the hollows of relatively mineral-rich boggy habitats and also grows in association with Larix (Crum and Anderson 1981; Vitt & Hamilton 1975).

Global Range Comment: Appears to be endemic to boreal and sub-arctic zones of North America (Vitt & Hamilton 1975). From Greenland, Newfoundland, Ontario, Quebec, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Connecticut in the east and from the Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba in central and western North America (Crum and Anderson 1981). Vitt & Hamilton (1975) give a detailed range as "..from the Brooks Range, Alsaka, into the High Arctic of Ellesmere Island and Peary Land, Greenland, south to southern British Columbia, northern Idaho, southern Alberta and east to Michigan and New York; disjunct in Colorado and Utah.".
Disjunct, more common elsewhere:
Peripheral, major distribution elsewhere:
