Global Habitat Comments: Solorina spongiosa grows on damp soil in alpine areas, tundra, streambanks, soil pockets in cliffs and rock outcrops, forest edges, roadsides, and abandoned quarries (Nimis 2025, CLH 2025).

Global Range Comment: Solorina spongiosa is widely distributed in temperate and boreal areas of the northern hemisphere with scattered outliers in New Zealand and Antarctica (GBIF 2025, CLH 2025). In Washington state, North America, this lichen species is rare in moss mats with calcareous seepage (McCune and Geiser 1997). Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens collected between 1994 and 2025 (GBIF 2025, CLH 2025).
