Screen Generated Reports

The following pages are a field by field description of the screen generated reports produced by the MASCOT System. The format used is that of a chart outlining certain characteristics about each field that appears on the MASCOT products. The actual products (samples) are attached at the end of this section (Figures 1-6) and are referenced by the Field number. For example, Field 2 on the chart is 'GCM #'. It appears on all the products and therefore the "On Products" item on the chart for Field 2 shows an "x" against each of the five products. Thus, all the products (Figures 1-6) show the GCM # and this is indicated as 2 where the GCM # appears on these products. If an "x" is not marked on the chart against a particular product, then that product does not contain the field in question. For example, Field 3 (which is Tablet Markings) shows an "x" against ID card, Preliminary ID Card, Multiple Listing, and ISA Certificate, but not against Index. This means that Tablet Marking is not contained in the Index product (Figures 5 and 6).

The charts also show "Associated Fields" and "Examples" for each field. Associated Fields are those fields that either this field depends on, or it is those fields that help clarify the intent for the field in question. "Examples" refer to actual sample value(s) for this field, i.e. as they may appear on the actual product(s).

Field 1
MASCOT DSS
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate
Description Form number for the MASCOT products. 'DSS-1' refers to a Final ID Card; ' DSS-2' refers to a Preliminary ID Card; 'DSS-3' refers to a digital format Multiple Listing; and 'DSS-4' refers to a hardcopy format Multiple Listing. The ISA Certificate does not have a form number.
Associated Fields
Examples MASCOT DSS-1, 'MASCOT DSS-3'

Field 2
GCM #
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate
Description A unique sequential number, from 1 to 999,999, with a check digit at the end, from 0 to 9, to uniquely identify a Geodetic Control Marker (GCM). This sequential number is randomly assigned as to physical location in and around the province of British Columbia. For the purposes of public users of MASCOT, a GCM is that mark, other than a monument used to mark a boundary, corner or line, set in the ground whose co-ordinate position is confirmed by the Director of Surveys. It is important to note that the GCM # may not be changed for the life of the physical marker, i.e. it is permanently associated with a given marker.
Associated Fields
Examples 65607, 650929, 380, 18, (lowest = 18; highest = 9999996.

Field 3
Tablet Markings
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate
Description Name of the GCM as stamped on the cap in the field. Under the MASCOT system, new markers will continue to be marked with a seven digit CSDB Identifier of the form "yyHxxxx" where "yy" is the year of installation and "xxxx" is a four digit number. It is important to note that tablet markings are not unique in the field for historical reasons. As attribute data, tablet markings (in the database) may change through reports from the field or otherwise (e.g., data entry mistake). A value of "NO MARKING" is used to indicate that the marker is known to have no tablet markings. A blank value indicates that the tablet markings (if any) is unknown.

See the EXAMPLES section below for a list of special cases.

Associated Fields
Examples 77H6940; 3915; NO MARKING; ''
PIER 5 (used to indicate a pillar on an EDM Baseline or GPS Basenet).

Field 4
Mapsheet Name
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate
Description Name of the mapsheet. For rural markers, consists of the letters 'NTS' followed by the NTS (National Topographic Series) map name as shown on the Survey Control Index. Rural markers which fall in the United States have a mapsheet name of 'USA' followed by the NTS map name of a nearby NTS mapsheet. For urban markers, refers to the name of the resident municipality, as shown on the Survey Control Index, followed by the 1:5000 BCGS Mapsheet Number the marker falls in. It is important to note that there is a one to one correspondence between the Mapsheet Name and the Survey Control Index. Thus, each marker having a certain Mapsheet Name will only appear on the particular Survey Control Index bearing the same name. If a Survey Control Index map name changes, then a corresponding change to this Mapsheet Name field will be made.
Associated Fields 'Mapsheet No.'
Examples 'NTS VANCOUVER' (rural), 'USA FERNIE' (rural), 'VANCOUVER 92G.026' (urban).

Field 5
Mapsheet No.
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate

Field 6
Municipality
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate
Description The Number and Name of the Municipality the marker appears in. Within MASCOT, Municipalities are defined by a polygon which corresponds, as closely as possible, to the official Municipal Boundary. As of 1996-March-25, only 10 municipalities have boundaries defined within MASCOT. As a temporary measure, any markers which appear in undefined municipalities will have Municipality Number and Name set equal to ISA Number and Name. See field 72 of this document for a description of the ISA Number and Name fields.
Associated Fields
Examples '#14-COQUITLAM'.

Field 7
Marker Condition
On Product x ID Card x Prelim ID Card x Multiple Listing Index ISA Certificate

Because of historical data problems, some of the markers may lack a condition date. The Multiple Listing product uses the terms "GOOD", "ANOMALY", and "DESTR." The ISA Certificate identifies destroyed markers with the phrase "MARKER DESTROYED", but gives no indication of marker condition if the marker is disturbed.

On the ID Card Product, note that for only a maximum of four sight lines is such detailed information shown. For other sight lines, the GCM numbers only are recorded (under 'Other connections to'). The above four sight lines are chosen on the basis of obtaining a representative sample of sight-lines around the full-circle horizon. Therefore, they are not necessarily the latest surveyed lines from this GCM. The ISA Certificate lists all sight lines, with a special comment of 'MARKER ISOLATED' printed if no sight lines exist.
