A Regional Contaminant Inventory for the Grand Forks Aquifer was carried out to identify potential sources of contamination at a regional scale that may pose a threat to groundwater quality. This regional inventory is important due to nitrate being a contaminant of concern due to land use activities. Includes location site maps showing the 1, 5 and 10 year capture zones, summary of Groundwater Supply Wells and Capture Zones. Grand Forks Aquifer Protection Committee, 45 pp., NTS Map 082E01

A Regional Contaminant Inventory was completed for the Grand Forks Aquifer. As a proactive means of protecting the Aquifer, the first two steps as outlined in the Well Protection Toolkit was completed, Step #1) forming a community planning team and Step #2) defining preliminary well protection areas. Given the dependence of the City and surrounding area on groundwater as a source of domestic and irrigation water, the intrinsic vulnerability of the local aquifer and the risk of groundwater contamination from agriculture, industry and other land uses, the Grand forks aquifer conducting a regional contaminant inventory was critical given that the major contaminant of concern nitrate, which is known to result from regional land use activities that likely fall outside the community well capture zones. This report presents the results of the following activities: 1) Review of existing data and reports; 2) Conduct a regional contaminant inventory; 3) Conduct a preliminary detailed contaminant inventory.
