Summit Environmental Consultants Ltd. (Summit) was retained by the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks in 1998 to carry out a channel assessment within the upper Bonaparte River watershed, defined as the watershed upstream of the confluence of Scottie Creek and the Bonaparte River. This project was funded through the Watershed Restoration program of Forest Renewal B.C. (FRBC).

The basic goal of the study was to focus efforts during subsequent prescription and implementation stages of the watershed restoration process. The two study objectives were: 1) To identify and prioritize channel disturbances; 2) To prioritize channel restoration priorities. To meet these objectives in a cost-efficient manner, a customized contract for the work was developed, which reduced the emphasis on the usual "channel assessment procedures" (CAP) methods of data collection and recording, digital deliverables, and other detailed specifications; and allowed the latitude to develop a customized approach and methodology top efficiently achieve the study objective.
