Biophysical Ecosystem Mapping (1:50,000) was done for the Central Purcell Mountains, located in the southeastern portion of British Columbia, along the eastern flank of the Columbia Mountains. The project identifies biophysical features and provides the ecological framework for ungulate capability mapping, wildlife interpretations and vegetation and terrain interpretations for recreational and other resource managment planning concerns.

The project was initiated in 1985 as a reconnaissance-level inventory or the big game and their habitats for the map sheets that include the Purcell WIlderness Conservancy. The project files available include biophysical habitat and vegetation and zonation landscape maps with legends. This project was part of a continuing biophysical inventory of the East Kootenay (see Demarchi 1986; Lea 1984 a and b). The project includes identification and mapping of surficial materials, biogeoclimatic units, biophysical habitat units and wild ungulate and grizzly bear capability. Each theme has been coded, digitized and stored using a main-frame, Intergraph system (CAPAMP). The study area covers the following NTS mapsheets: 82F.016, 82K.001, 82K.002, 82K.007, 82K.008, 82K.009, 82K.010, 82K.014, 82K.015, 82K.016. It is situated in the following ecosections: the Central (CCM), Northern (NCM), and Eastern (ECM) Columbia Mountains; Eastern Purcell Mountains (EPM); and East Kootenay Trench (EKT) and contains the following biogeoclimatic subzones: Moist Interior Alpine Tundra (ATe), Dry Southern Cordilleran Alpine Tundra (ATt), Dry Southern Cordilleran Forested Engelmann Spruce Subalpine Fir (ESSFa), Wet Forested Engelmann Spruce - Subalpine Fir (ESSFb), Moist Southern Forested Engelmann Spruce - Subalpine Fir (ESSFc), Moist Southern Interior Cedar - Hemlock (ICHa), Wet Interior Cedar - Hemlock (ICHb), Dry Cordilleran Interior Douglas Fir (IDFg), Dry Southern Cordilleran Montane Spruce (MSa). Wildlife species noted in the study include Elk (Cervus elaphus), Mule Dear (Odocoileus hemionus), Moose (Alces alces), Mountain Goat (Oreamnos amricanus), Grizzly (Ursus arctos) and Black (Ursus americanus) bears.
